FAQ

Screening tests detect disease before symptoms appear, allowing for earlier and more effective treatment. To be widely recommended, screening programs must show clear benefits—such as lowering disease-related deaths.

Common screening methods include lab tests (blood or fluid analysis), genetic testing for inherited risks, and imaging to view internal structures. Recommendations vary by age, sex, and family history.

  • Heart Screenings assess individuals without symptoms of coronary artery disease (CAD) and may include checks for:
    • Cholesterol (LDL & HDL) to gauge artery health
    • Blood glucose for diabetes risk
    • C-reactive protein (CRP) for inflammation
    • Blood pressure to evaluate heart strain

If results or risk factors suggest CAD, further tests may include:

  • ECG/EKG to measure heart rhythm
  • Stress testing (exercise or medication-based) to assess blood flow
  • Echocardiography (ultrasound imaging)
  • Cardiac CT or CTA to detect calcium buildup or plaque
  • Myocardial perfusion imaging to evaluate blood flow
  • Catheter angiography to view arterial blockages directly

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S., and its most common form—coronary artery disease (CAD)—often develops silently as plaque builds up in the arteries, restricting blood flow and increasing heart attack risk.

You should consider heart screening if you have one or more of the following risk factors:

  • Age 45+ for men or 50+ for women
  • Family history of heart disease
  • Smoking
  • High cholesterol or blood pressure
  • Diabetes, obesity, or physical inactivity

Screening Recommendations
The American Heart Association advises routine checks for all adults:

  • Cholesterol: Every 5 years (more often if elevated or at higher risk)
  • Blood pressure: At least every 2 years
  • Blood glucose: Every 3 years starting at age 45
  • High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP): For those at moderate (10–20%) risk of heart attack within 10 years

If initial results or risk factors suggest possible CAD, your doctor may recommend additional imaging or stress tests to evaluate heart function and blood flow.
